Theni District Farmers Goat Producer Company Limited

VIDIYAL facilitated 1050 Women Goat farmers in to a Farmers Producer Company. Theni District Farmers Goat Producer Company Limited, a company registered under the Companies Act, 2013 with the support of NABARD, is aimed at promotion of interests’ of women Farmers. VIDIYAL, an NGO in Theni District, Tamil Nadu, India with the Support of Commonwealth of learning (COL) an intergovernmental organization in Canada, facilitate livelihood security to women who rear goat through its “Life Long Learning” program. The shares of the Company are owned by Producers who work for the mutual-benefit and with the intention of sharing the profits and a holistic growth of the Company. The Company traces back its origin to 13th December 2013 in association with Aharam Traditional Crop Producer Company Limited (ATCPCL) facilitated by the Covenant Centre for Development (CCD), Madurai for creating a common platform for marketing its produce.

THENI: As many as 1,234 women goat farmers in Bodi West Hills in Tamil Nadu have floated a company. Each of these women has contributed an equity share of Rs 1,000 as capital for the company -- Theni District Goat Farmers Producer Company Limited.

The company will be involved in procuring medicines and fodder for their goats and sell matured goats for handsome prices without the interference of middlemen. The profit will be shared as dividend.

Theni district collector N Venkatachalam inaugurated the company on Tuesday.

The women are known in the locality as "voicemail goat farmers" since these uneducated women listen to voicemails sent to them through mobile phones and rear the goats in a scientific manner based on the advice they get.

For last two years the women have been visiting various producers companies across the state and nearby states to learn the nuances of running a producer company.

Eight women have been elected to the 10-member board of directors of the company. Vidiyal, an NGO, will provide them technical support.

"Our women have finally gained the confidence to run their own company. They took more time so that the model does not fail and bring them bad reputation," said K Kamaraj of Vidiyal.
