The watershed Development project is being implemented by Vidiyal, having a watershed area of 860.90 hectares, in T. Meenatchipuram Village of Uthamapalayam Block. Before the implementation of the project up to 1995 – 1996, run off, soil erosion and deforestation, the cultivable lands were made into unproductive lands with poor ground water table.

Now the beneficiary farmers of watershed area farmed a Watershed Development Committee (WDC) with President, Secretary and Treasurer with executive members to have an effective supervision and control over the assets created by the project.

Out of 21 different benefit scheme of the project, the members of the WDC were sanctioned with a short term loan of Rs. 5000 per farmer as petty trade loan with low interest rates, so as to generate additional income for their livelihood. Before the launch of the project, migration of farmers from native village was common but due to the project now the small and marginal farmers and even landless labourers remain in their village due to increased agricultural activities. More than 5000 Nos. of fruit tree seedlings were distributed to the farmers based on their farm holding.

Some of the watershed beneficiary farmers are also provided with Mobile phone to hear and record the voice mails on Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry and Livelihoods.

Due to the implementation of the watershed project, the rural employment opportunity is increased, single and rain fed cropping improved into double cropping and garden land farming. Due to development of plantation rain fall has also increased; ground water table is also raised. Live stock population with grazing land area increased.

In general the farmers of the watershed area are very happy of the project which improved their livelihood activities on agriculture and livestock farming
